Editor's note: Lei Dongmei is a safety inspector for the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. She works for the Hebei provincial sub-bureau under the project's central route construction and administration bureau, and is mainly responsible for monitoring a 34-kilometer-long section of the central route in Xinle city. In addition to civil engineering and water quality inspection, Lei's routine work includes collecting, summarizing, analyzing and reporting data generated by safety monitoring devices.
Lei's aging parents are in poor health, and her husband suffered brain hemorrhage and now requires constant care. She also has a daughter attending junior high school. Despite these heavy burdens, Lei has been doing her job cautiously and conscientiously. In her own words, she is a "physician" for the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. As such, she must perform her duties and could not be even the least careless regarding safety issues.
