The South to North Water Diversion Project in China is the largest of its kind ever undertaken. The water is drawn from southern rivers and supplied to the drier north. The project is expected to complete fully in 2050.
It will eventually divert almost 45 billion cubic metres of water annually to the population centres of the north. When finished, the Water Diversion Project will link China’s four main rivers- the Yangtze, Yellow River, Huaihe and Haihe. There’ll be three diversion routes, stretching south-to-north across the eastern, central and western parts of the country.
The entire project is expected to cost 62 billion US dollars.
