Forum on China, Portuguese-speaking countries to deepen cooperation

Representatives from China and Portuguese-speaking countries gathered in LisbonĀ on Tuesday to discuss cooperation and development issues.

China attaches importance to relations with Portuguese-speaking countries and has deepened cooperation with them, said Chinese Ambassador to Portugal Gao Kexiang.

Trade between China and these countries in 2008 totaled nearly 77 billion US dollars, he noted.

Gao said China is willing to enhance dialogue with Portuguese-speaking countries, explore new areas of cooperation and strive for a win-win situation.

China values the role of Macao in economic and commercial cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, Gao added.

At the one-day symposium, experts discussed a whole range of issues, including the economic and commercial ties, China's relations with Portuguese-speaking countries.

Participants recognized China's rapid economic development as opportunities for the world, including the Portuguese-speaking countries.

Participants also pointed out some challenges and difficulties in China's relations with Portuguese-speaking countries, particularly Portugal.

They mentioned the lack of progress in China-Portugal cooperation in the banking sector, cooperation between local authorities and the lack of ambition of Portuguese enterprises in the Chinese market.
