As a diplomat, you can see the world and deal with a variety of fresh challenges every day, Mulroney said, speaking at a dialogue organized by the All-China Youth Federation, a Party-affiliated youth organization. Although he could earn more in the private sector, other jobs would never allow him to experience the same things, he added.

Mulroney comes to Beijing from a posting as deputy minister of Canada's Afghanistan task force. He cites that position as an example of the glamorous, exciting life of a diplomat. As part of that job, he made frequent flights to Kandahar and other cities, meeting with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, former U.N. secretary general Kofi Annan and other important political and business figures, he said.

"Diplomacy is the best thing that ever happened to me," Mulroney said.

David also told the Chinese youth to work hard to be successful. He said he’s been with the Canadian Foreign Service for 38 years. It took him a long time to become an ambassador, and he found the only way to stand out in the field is to work hard.
