At least five people have been injured after four unidentified gunmen opened fire inside the ruling Trinamool Congress party office at Kharagpur in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal Wednesday, a senior police official said.
"The incident took place in the afternoon when the party office was full with functionaries. The gunmen first hurled grenades at the office from outside and then went inside and fired indiscriminately," he said, on condition of anonymity.
The injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of one who sustained a bullet wound in his stomach is serious, the official said.
"We suspect it was masterminded by a faction of the party but it's not clear yet," he said.
A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added.
