Venezuela's prosecutor-general announced on Tuesday four people have been killed in the western state of Barinas during protests against President Nicolas Maduro, taking the death toll since April 1 to 53.

While no specifics were provided about the incidents leading up to the deaths, the authorities announced they were investigating the death of Freiber Perez, 21, "who was shot last night (May 22) during a protest."

An inquiry has also been launched into the death of Miguel Bravo, 25, "during a protest which happened last night in Socopo."

Two other deaths were confirmed as being Alfredo Carrizales during a protest in the capital of Barinas state, as well as Adonis Perez, 22 years old.

On Monday, the prosecutor-general of Venezuela already confirmed the death of a young 19-year-old man, Yorman Bervecia, in the Barinas town of Los Pozones.

This brings to 53 the number of deaths in Venezuela during protests against President Nicolas Maduro, who is accused by the opposition of being the cause of the country's political, economic and social crisis.
