Pakistan on Saturday reopened border with Afghanistan after keeping it closed for 23 days, the army said.

The border at Chaman crossing in southwestern Balochistan province was closed on May 5 after cross-border firing broke out between the two neighbors and caused casualties on both sides.

"Pakistan has opened Friendship gate Chaman on humanitarian grounds in Ramazan on request from Afghan authorities," said a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations on Saturday, the media wing of the Pakistan Army.

After the Chaman incident, Pakistan has its area under effective control, the statement said.

Pakistan army spokesman had earlier said the Afghan Border Police had opened fire on the Pakistani border forces in Balochistan province.

On their part, Afghan officials had insisted that Pakistani forces had "intruded into Afghan territory."
