The ASEAN China Centre (ACC) held the 2017 ASEAN-China Day Fair on Thursday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN and enhance ASEAN-China people-to-people and cultural exchanges.

ACC Secretary-General Yang Xiuping's welcoming remarks were read to the participants including Soegeng Raharjo, ambassador of Indonesia to China; Tian Yan, Standing Vice President of Beijing People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries; Li Yi, the deputy head of Beijing Xicheng District and representatives from ASEAN countries to China.

Madame Yang said that the ASEAN, founded in 1967, is now actively implementing Vision 2025 to elevate and deepen the relationship among ASEAN countries. This year ASEAN has organized a series of celebratory activities and launched "Visit ASEAN@50: Golden Celebration" campaign to showcase the beautiful landscape and rich culture and tradition of ASEAN.

In recent years, people-to-people and cultural exchanges have become a new bright spot in ASEAN-China relations. 2015 was the Year of Maritime Cooperation, 2016 was the Year of Educational Exchange, and this year is the Year of Tourism Cooperation.

As of 2016, the number of exchange students between ASEAN and China surpassed 200,000 and the number of bilateral visits approached a record high of 32 million. China has set up four Chinese cultural centers, 32 Confucius Institutes and 35 Confucius Classrooms in ASEAN countries.

In May, all 10 ASEAN countries actively took part in the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing. The participants agreed to further strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, encourage dialogue and exchanges among different civilizations and to promote tourism development among other partnerships.

These measures will help promote people-to-people connectivity and deepen practical cooperation between not only China and ASEAN but also China and the rest of the world.
