At least nine people were killed and many others feared trapped Thursday after concrete roof of a bus terminal collapsed in southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, local media reports said.

The roof collapsed in Somanur area of Coimbatore city, about 510 km southwest of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

"We have pulled out some bodies but the exact death toll can be reported only after proper verification and completion of rescue operation," a senior official at Coimbatore told Xinhua. "Right now rescue operations are going on as some people are still feared trapped under the debris."

Immediately after the roof collapse, authorities rushed rescuers and ambulances to the spot to carry out rescue operations and carry the injured to hospital.

Local media said nine people were killed and 11 others injured in the roof collapse.

Eyewitnesses said many people were waiting under the bus terminal at the time of its collapse.

Police officers said they were ascertaining the cause of roof collapse.

Last month, 21 people were killed and 34 others injured after a building collapse in Indian financial capital Mumbai.
