A Spanish air-force pilot has been confirmed dead in a Eurofighter crash on landing after taking part in the military parade to celebrate Spain's national day on Thursday.

The crash happened at the Los Llanos air force base, close to the city of Albacete, south of Madrid, and the Spanish Defense Ministry named the pilot as Captain Borja Aybar.

Although the causes of the accident are still unknown, the Defense Ministry explained the accident happened when the aircraft, one of four Eurofighters which took part in the fly-past in Thursday's parade, crashed as it was approaching the runway.

An ensuing fire and a large column of smoke can be seen from a distance away.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Defense Minister Maria Dolores de Cospedal left the reception that was being held at the Royal Palace in Madrid following the parade to travel to the Los Llanos base, while King Felipe VI expressed his condolences to the victim of the accident.

Thursday's parade saw the participation of 3,900 military personal, along with 78 different aircraft, including four Eurofighters.
