Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF party will launch on Tuesday the parliamentary process for impeaching embattled President Robert Mugabe, according to officials.

It should take Parliament two days to impeach Mugabe, the Associated Press has reported citing officials.

Monday's decision came after an ultimatum that the ruling party has given Mugabe to resign passed without any clear statement from the 93-year-old that he is willing to step down.

On Sunday, Mugabe shocked the nation during a televised address in which he ignored calls for resignation and announced that he will preside over a Zanu-PF congress next month, despite being stripped of his position as the party’s leader over the weekend.

Once a simple majority of parliamentarians vote for impeachment, lawmakers will form an investigative committee, which will report back to both houses of parliament.

Each house must secure a two-thirds majority for Mugabe to be removed from office.
