Sino-U.S. relations have achieved sound and sustainable momentum even though there are still some misjudgments questioning China's development, Cui Tiankai, the Chinese ambassador to the United States, said during an event at his embassy in Washington D.C. on Feb. 6.

Cui spoke at a festive celebration hosted by the embassy ahead of the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year.

According to the ambassador, relations of major countries, like China and the United States, are both significant and complicated, and sometimes lack smoothness.

Cui said, some people seemed disappointed that China has been committed to its own development path, whereas to him, the choice was based on the country's own situation, with long-developed theories, mechanisms and culture as its bedrock.

He hoped critics should give up their headstrong mirage and face reality.

Besides, he argued against views that, if China continues to adhere to its own path, Sino-U.S. confrontations will inevitably arise.

The ambassador emphasized that China will not pursue a development model at the sacrifice of others' interests. According to the report at the opening ceremony of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the country has proposed a community of shared future for all mankind and a new model of international relations to face challenges and ensure shared interests.

During his speech, Cui argued against those who seemed to be enthusiastic in guessing which country would become the true master of the 21st Century.

"In their opinion, the choice sounds so easy to be made. However, it is the test of times that decides whether the countries can ride the tide of history, meet people's expectations and move forward smoothly. It is the countries which need to face the choice of the times and the pros and cons raised by its people, not reversed," Cui said.

Cui also rebuked the adoption of the concept of "Sharp Power" to describe China's international influence.

"Anyone, who truly understand China's cultural quintessence and developmental theories and commitments and realize its contribution to the peaceful development of the world, will not link the phrase with the country's endeavor, which is, to the contrary, fresh, wise and positive," he said.

China with its own experience has exemplified that the world's development models can be diversified, the ambassador added.

According to Cui, last year, the state leaders of China and the United States held three meetings, exchanged several rounds of correspondence and made numerous phone calls. Besides, the two countries also finished the first round of the "four high-level dialogues", giving much encouragement.
