Morocco said on Saturday it will consolidate efforts to promote peace and security in Africa, as the country is about to start a two-year term at the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU).

The pledge was made by the Moroccan Foreign Ministry in a statement, stressing many complex security challenges that Africa faces, which require joint and concerted action as well as an unwavering commitment by African countries.

This goal will only be achieved through political stability, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, as well as the consolidation of the rule of law in Africa, said the ministry.

It added that the common African agenda should focus on urgent and priority conflict and crisis situations, which constitute a real threat to peace and security in Africa, promoting a comprehensive and inclusive approach.

Morocco will, during its mandate in the PSC, give priority to the issues of prevention and the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, as well as post-conflict reconstruction, the ministry stressed.

Last year, Morocco rejoined the AU after three decades of absence from the pan-African organization.
