Mexico's Health Ministry said on Sunday that 274 deaths related to COVID-19 were reported during the past 24 hours, taking the national toll from the pandemic to 47,746.

Meanwhile, 4,853 new cases of COVID-19 were reported, bringing the total in the country to 439,046.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry said in mid-July that the country sought to extend restrictions on non-essential border travel with the United States for an additional 30 days.

As the testing capacity grows, the government has estimated that the real number of infections is likely higher than the current figure.

Latin America, which has some 8 percent of the world's population, has strived to stem the spread of COVID-19 as governments seek to ease lockdowns to revive the economy.
