China-S. Korea Outstanding Women's Forum held via video link

A forum focusing on women's leadership and women's contribution in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic was held in Beijing and Seoul via a video link on Oct. 16.
The 2020 China-S. Korea Outstanding Women's Forum, co-hosted by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF) and the 21st Century South Korea-China Exchange Association, brought together over 50 prominent women from the two countries from the fields of government affairs, healthcare, science and technology, and education.
Wang Jiarui, chairman of the CSCLF, pointed out in his opening speech that in the joint fight against COVID-19, China and South Korea have always been helping and supporting each other and women of the two countries have been playing a key role in the healthcare sector's response to the COVID-19 crisis.
Xia Jie, vice president of the All-China Women's Federation, said that, in China, at the height of the battle against COVID-19, two-thirds of more than 40,000 health workers from across the country who rushed to the hardest-hit Hubei province were women.
She also noted that over the past 70 years, China has made remarkable achievements in terms of women's development so that the social status of women had become significantly higher.
"We look forward to cementing friendship and deepening cooperation with women from all countries, including South Korea, to jointly advance the global cause of women's development and contribute to world peace and prosperity," she said.
Kim Han-kyu, president of the 21st Century South Korea-China Exchange Association, said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries 28 years ago, rapid development had been achieved in bilateral cooperation on all fronts, which had not only benefited the two countries, but also make contributions to peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia.
The pandemic could not hinder exchanges between women of South Korea and China and the current video conference at this crucial moment was of profound significance, he said.
The participants conducted in-depth discussions and exchanges under the theme of "role of Chinese and Korean women in the fight against the pandemic" and "future-oriented women's leadership in China and South Korea."
Luo He, a cardiologist at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, introduced her working experience at the forefront of the pandemic fight in Wuhan and talked about Chinese women's bravery and dedication demonstrated there.
Former South Korean politician Shin Yong-hyeon briefed in the important role that women played in the fields of medical care, health, science and technology in response to the pandemic in the country, and called for the implementation of relevant policies in the post-epidemic era to reduce women's burden and empower them.
Zheng Xinrong, a director of CSCLF and professor of Beijing Normal University, analyzed the factors that were hindering the development of women's leadership and pointed out some ways to improve this situation, citing specific examples and research results.
Starting from 2014, the China-S. Korea Outstanding Women's Forum is held in China and South Korea alternately. It serves as an important platform to promote mutual understanding and development.
