A new Pentagon survey showed women in the military bore the highest level of unwanted sexual contact since 2006, when the Department of Defense (DOD) started tracking the data, reported USA Today on Thursday.

The survey found sexual assaults on women in the military surged 35 percent in 2018-2021, reaching the highest level since records began 16 years ago.

In 2021, men and women, for all active-duty troops, the estimated number of victims of unwanted sexual contact was more than 35,800, said the report.

It is a startling finding because sexual crimes climbed even as DOD spent millions on prevention and senior leaders vowed to tackle it, according to the report.
