The defense cooperation agreement (DCA) between Sweden and the United States took effect on Thursday, according to a press release from the Swedish government.

Defense Minister Pal Jonson described the DCA as "a cornerstone for defense in Northern Europe," adding that it will create conditions for American military support and presence.

In December 2023, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark signed bilateral DCAs with the U.S. These agreements will come into force once ratified by the parliament of each country.

The Swedish parliament approved the controversial agreement in June, despite opposition from the Left Party and the Green Party, who criticized its lack of provisions regarding nuclear weapons, according to Swedish Television.

Under the DCAs, the U.S. has been granted access to military infrastructure in these countries.

The Finnish parliament approved the DCA with the U.S. in July, and the agreement is expected to take effect on Sept. 1. The Danish parliament has not yet voted on the agreement.
