UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday condemned Iran's missile attack against Israel on Tuesday.

Iran launched approximately 200 ballistic missiles towards Israel on Tuesday, Guterres told the Security Council at an emergency session on the situation in the Middle East.

"As I did in relation to the Iranian attack in April -- and as should have been obvious yesterday in the context of the condemnation I expressed -- I again strongly condemn yesterday's massive missile attack by Iran on Israel," he said.

Iran stated it was in response to the killings of Hassan Nasrallah and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp commander Abbas Nilforoushan last week, as well as that of the Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July, said the UN chief.

"These attacks paradoxically do nothing to support the cause of the Palestinian people or reduce their suffering," he said.

Iran fired about 180 missiles at Israel Tuesday evening after the ongoing Israeli military offensive in Lebanon killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Israel would retaliate against Iran's missile attack.
