Xin Baoan, chairman of the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) and president of the China Electricity Council (CEC), met with Dilma Rousseff, former president of Brazil and president of the New Development Bank (NDB), in Shanghai on Oct. 30. The two leaders held in-depth discussions and reached a consensus on topics including clean energy development and power grid interconnection among BRICS countries.

Xin highlighted GEIDCO's role as a collaborative platform and think tank, driving global efforts to advance clean energy and power grid interconnection projects. Over recent years, GEIDCO has tackled critical issues related to energy, climate, and the environment, offering research insights and practical solutions. The NDB, with its commitment to investing in infrastructure and sustainable development, has pledged 40% of its funding to climate change mitigation and adaptation projects, aligning closely with GEIDCO's mission. Xin expressed his enthusiasm for deepening collaboration on clean energy and interconnection initiatives, particularly across BRICS regions, with the combined strengths of GEIDCO's research capabilities and NDB's financial resources.

Rousseff commended the progress in China-Brazil energy cooperation, particularly emphasizing the impact of UHV technology in promoting power interconnections and sustainable socio-economic development. She noted that cross-regional power interconnections can significantly enhance energy efficiency and lay a solid foundation for energy transition. With an urgent need for energy transition in many NDB member countries, GEIDCO's expertise in energy can offer valuable intellectual support for sustainable infrastructure projects across BRICS nations. The NDB looks forward to strengthening its partnership with GEIDCO to empower BRICS countries and other emerging economies in their development goals.

The NDB, a multilateral development institution founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is dedicated to supporting infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging markets. In addition to the founding BRICS members, its membership now includes Bangladesh, the UAE, and Egypt. Headquartered in Shanghai, the NDB also operates four regional hubs in South Africa, Brazil, Russia, and India.

Secretary General Wu Xuan, along with heads from GEIDCO's General Office and Development Bureau, as well as the advisor to the NDB president, participated in the meeting.
