The extremist militant group Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed Afghanistan's acting minister for refugees and repatriation on Wednesday.

An IS militant detonated his explosive vest, resulting in the deaths of Khalil Rahman Haqqani and several of his colleagues and bodyguards, a report issued by IS-affiliated news agency "Amaq" stated.

Four people, including Haqqani, were killed and four others, including Haqqani's guards, were critically injured following the attack, an official at the Afghan Ministry of Interior told Xinhua on Wednesday.

Haqqani is the first cabinet member killed since the Afghan caretaker government took over power in 2021.
