Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein held Wednesday a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on developments in the Middle East, particularly in Syria, the ministry said in a statement.
During the phone call, Hussein stressed the need to protect Syrian minorities and other components and ensure their participation in the political process, it said.
For his part, Guterres expressed his concern about potential tensions between some Syrian armed groups and the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), noting that contacts are underway with Türkiye and Qatar to discuss ways to calm the situation, it said.
Türkiye sees the YPG group as the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union.
