Japan is the least qualified to make irresponsible remarks on the Taiwan question, and the Taiwan question has nothing to do with Japan, a Chinese defense spokesperson said at a press conference on Thursday.

Wu Qian, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks in response to a media query regarding Japan's plan to deploy long-range missiles on its Kyushu Island over so-called concerns about a possible "attack" by the Chinese mainland on Taiwan.

Wu also responded to a senior Japanese official's recent remarks expressing "serious concern" over the increase in China's 2025 defense budget, emphasizing that China had already provided detailed explanations regarding the budget increase.

The international community should actually be vigilant about Japan's moves to significantly increase its defense spending and develop long-range offensive capabilities, Wu said.

"In fact, as a country that waged aggressive wars during World War II, Japan is the least qualified to point fingers at other countries' defense spending," he said.

Noting that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the spokesperson urged Japan to heed the lessons of history and stop distorting and misinterpreting China's defense policy and military strategy.
