Azerbaijan intercepts drugs trafficked from Iran

BAKU, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Azerbaijan's Ministry of National Security has intercepted a large amount of drugs trafficked from neighboring Iran, the press service of the Ministry announced on Monday.

Two Azerbaijani citizens, Amid Nahmatov and Ayaz Imanverdiyev, entered into a deal with an Iranian citizen, who smuggled a large amount of drugs from Iran to Azerbaijan's Astara region, some 320 kilometers from Baku, said a press release from the ministry.

Security officers seized about 24 kg of hashish from Nahmatov's house and the two Azerbaijanis were arrested for suspected drug trafficking.

Azerbaijan shares a 661-km border with Iran, which is accused by Azerbaijan of being one the major drug producing countries with trafficking routes leading from Afghanistan.

During the last few decades, the number of reported drug smuggling cases has significantly increased in Azerbaijan. Enditem
