UN envoy Angelina Jolie visits refugee camps in Turkey

GAZIANTEP, Turkey, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Hollywood star and UN goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie on Thursday visited two Syrian refugee camps in southern Turkey.

Accompanied by UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonia Guterres, Jolie met with some of the 12,000 refugees at Oncupinar camp in southeastern Kilis city. She stopped by women in front of a carpet loom and joined the Syrian children while they were singing in Turkish.

Jolie also visited the Islahiye tent city in southern Gaziantep province. The tent city shelters nearly 8,000 Syrians who fled the relentless violence that has engulfed Syria for 18 months.

The Syrian crisis has forced some 235,000 Syrians to flee to neighboring countries, according to official UN figures.

Jolie and Guterres were in Lebanon on Wednesday where they discussed with Lebanese officials on the Syrian refugee issue and met those Syrians seeking shelters in the neighboring country. Enditem
