Hungary urges int'l cooperation on water, sanitation issues
UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian President Janos Ader on Tuesday called for multilateral cooperation in addressing water and sanitation issues.
Ader made the statement as he was taking the floor at the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, which opened here on Tuesday morning.
Hungary treats the issue of water and sanitation as "one of the most important issues of the 21st century," said Ader.
The president cited many statistics to underscore the importance of the issue, including the fact that more than one billion people in the world are without portable water.
With rivers or water basins often shared by more than one country, "cooperation between countries is a daily obligation," he said.
Ader said that the absence of cooperation "may lead to the emergence of supply, social or even war tensions."
Meanwhile, the president invited all interested parties to a conference on water and sanitation next autumn in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Enditem
