MILAN, Italy, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were injured when two metro trains collided at a subway station in the Italian northern city of Milan on Wednesday, local authorities said.

The accident occurred at around 10:00 a.m. (0800 GMT) near Gioia railway station, in the city center, a spokesman with the Vigili del Fuoco police in Milan, Vittorio Di Giacomo, told Xinhua.

He said the accident was due to a "fainting spell" of the first train's driver, who was thus not able to stop at Gioia and proceeded towards the next station, hurting another train that was moving in the same direction.

"At least 10 people were injured, besides to the driver," the spokesman said, adding all the injured were on the first train, and fell under the impact of collision.

The wounded were rushed to nearby hospitals, fortunately not in serious conditions, and will be allowed to go home after treatment, he said. Several others were contused, according to rescue teams.

"After the collision, there was a period of total black out, with a lot of fear among all passengers who used the displays of mobile phones to look around," a passenger was quoted as saying by local media.

The traffic on the subway line was briefly interrupted. Enditem
