Typhoon "Jelawat" scudding out of Japan
TOKYO, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- A subdued tropical storm was speeding out of Japan on Monday after bringing gusty winds to Tokyo and injuring dozens of people, causing blackouts and paralyzing traffic to the south and west of the capital.
The Japan Meteorological Agency had warned Tokyo residents to stay indoors while "Jelawat" -- the 17th typhoon this year -- passed Sunday night. The storm once packed winds of up to 126 km an hour but weakened to 108 km per hour Monday morning.
The typhoon has left 145 people injured in southern and western Japan, about half of whom sustained injuries in the southern Okinawa Prefecture, public broadcaster NHK said. Tens of thousands of homes were without electricity.
Kyodo news agency earlier reported one fatality, a man who was swept away by sea water while fishing in Okinawa. Enditem
