At least 1,842 houses located in Serdang Bedagai regency in Indonesia's North Sumatra province were inundated by flooding originated from the spillover of the Serdang River in the early rainy season that hit the western region of the country, an Indonesian senior official said here on Monday.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, an official at Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said the flooding was caused by torrential downpour during Saturday and Sunday.

"The regional disaster mitigation agency has conducted quick orchestrated efforts to help villagers whose houses were inundated by the flooding. Five control posts have been set up in crucial locations, coordinating relief aids to the villagers by providing logistics and foods to them," he said.

Flooding was also reported in Mandailing Natal regency in the province following the spillover of Rantopuran and Batang Angkola rivers lining up in the regency. No casualties have been reported so far, Sutopo said. Endi
