Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva on Wednesday congratulated U.S. President Barack Obama on his re-election to the White House.
Silva said that he was certain that during the second term of Obama, the historical bonds of friendship that link the two countries will become strengthened and that they will find new means of cooperation to reinforce bilateral relations for mutual benefit.
"The world in which we nowadays live places before us new and constant challenges to which we have to find adequate answers," the president said in his congratulatory message.
"I am certain that your Excellency will continue, during your new presidential mandate, such as in the past, to drive towards finding solutions for the challenges placed before the international community," he said.
Silva also praised the role of the Portuguese community in the United States, which he said was a fundamental link between the two countries.
Obama defeated his Republican challenger Mitt Romney in the presidential elections held on Tuesday. Endi
