Germany will have to brace for continuing heavy snowfall, strong winds and freezing temperatures in most parts of the country this week, authorities warned on Monday.
The German weather service DWD said about 10 cm of new snow will fall overnight in many areas and temperatures could drop to minus 15 degrees Celsius at night in mountainous areas by mid-week.
The cold snap caused dire consequences, as black ice and melting snow has resulted in travel disruption and accidents. Police in Bavaria have reported several injuries in incidents on the roads.
More than a quarter of the 1,210 scheduled flights of Frankfurt airport were cancelled on Sunday due to heavy snowfall, while German railway operator Deutsche Bahn said it put a speed limit of 200 km per hour on their trains to prevent accidents.
Lives have also been claimed over the weekend by the cold weather, with local media reporting that a man was found dead in the icy snow near a building in Berlin on Saturday and a woman froze to death in a park in Saxony-Anhalt at night on the same day. Endi
