Myanmar president meets Indian FM

Myanmar president U Thein Sein met with Indian foreign minister Salman Khurshid at the president office in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday evening, agreeing on further cooperation between the two countries, according to the website of Myanmar presidential office.

At the meeting, the two sides discussed cooperation in energy, construction, electric power, development of border areas, education and health sectors, construction of India-Myanmar-Thai highway, enhancing bilateral friendship and promoting the investment between the two countries, the official sources said.

Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid arrived in Nay Pyi Taw Friday afternoon to pay a three-day official goodwill visit to Myanmar which is aimed at boosting bilateral ties.

It is the Khurshid's first visit abroad after he took office as foreign minister.

During his visit in Myanmar, Khurshid will call on Myanmar President U Thein Sein and hold discussion with Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin.

Khurshid is expected to meet Aung San Suu Kyi, parliamentarian and chairwoman of the Committee for Rule of Law and Tranquility of Myanmar's Lower House, during his visit.

Suu Kyi had visited India last month, during which she met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other leaders.

On Saturday, Khurshid will travel to Yangon to inaugurate the International Buddhist Conference in Yangon, the Indian Embassy here said.

He will also attend the ceremony to mark the unveiling of the Sarnath Buddha Statue gifted by India at Shwedagon Pagoda.

On Saturday night, an Indian performance troupe will entertain at the National Theatre here under the cultural exchange program between the two countries, the embassy added.

In May, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid an official goodwill visit to Myanmar, and had comprehensive discussions with his Myanmar counterpart President U Thein Sein on joint projects, economic cooperation, trade and investment, communications, education, science and technology, among others.

Singh's visit to Myanmar also produced a package of 12 accords which include two agreements and 10 memorandums of understanding. Endi
