Russian President Vladimir Putin sent condolences to his U.S. counterpart Saturday over the Connecticut school shooting tragedy.
Putin "expressed deep condolences to U.S. President Barack Obama in connection with the tragedy in the elementary school in Connecticut," the Kremlin press service said in an online statement.
It was especially sorrowful that most of the victims were children, Putin said, asking Obama to convey his words of support and sympathy to the families and friends of the victims and expressing "empathy with the American people," according to the statement.
A gunman slaughtered 28 people, including 20 children at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut on Friday.
The shooting is the second most deadly in the U.S. history, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech Massacre in April 2007, which claimed 33 lives.
Obama on Friday said the United States needed to take "meaningful action," regardless of politics, to prevent more tragedies in the wake of this deadly shooting rampage, saying the country had seen too many shootings throughout the years. Endi
