Nine people have been killed and over 3,000 displaced following floods and landslides in Sri Lanka over the past two days, officials said Tuesday.
A Disaster Management Center (DMC) spokesman said eight people were killed in landslides and floods in the central Matale district while one person was killed in flash floods in Kandy.
A total of 4,917 people were affected by the bad weather while 3,411 were displaced.
The displaced people were transferred to temples, schools and temporary shelters in the respective areas.
On Sunday night, over 200 soldiers of Sri Lanka Army were involved in an operation to rescue 455 university students who went missing in the central hills.
Army spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said that all the students were rescued by Monday.
The Sri Lankan Department of Meteorology said that the bad weather was a result of an atmospheric disturbance in the southern part of the island.
The extreme weather conditions also saw fish fall from the sky in the southern town of Matara on Monday.
Officials said they believed the fish were sucked out of the water from a mini-tornado at sea or a river and thrown back to the ground. Endi
