An avalanche in Tyrol in western Austria has left a German man dead and other injured, local media reported Thursday.
The deceased was mountaineering with a colleague on Hohe Munde mountain when it is believed the two triggered the avalanche themselves, toppled down a cliff for about 200 meters, and were both covered by snow, according to the Austria Press Agency.
Despite the use of two helicopters, several mountain rescue teams and a canine unit, police said rescue efforts were hampered by extreme avalanche risk, and it took them about two and a half hours to locate the injured, and a further hour to locate the deceased individual.
The deceased was already dead by the time rescuers managed to dig him out of the snow, while the injured was flown to a hospital in Garmisch, Bavaria in southern Germany. Endi
