Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Friday said 280 Nigerians died in 480 auto accidents which occurred across the country between Dec.19 and Jan. 3.
Osita Chidoka, the corps marshal of the FRSC, disclosed this to reporters in Abuja shortly after an aerial patrol of road traffic, adding that 1,600 people sustained various degrees of injuries from the accidents. Chidoka said during the period, 13,000 vehicles were booked for various traffic offenses out of 36,000 stopped by operatives of the FRSC, while the rest were cautioned and discharged.
He said out of the 399 traffic offenders charged to mobile courts, one was sentenced to jail, 370 fined and the rest discharged and acquitted.
Chidoka attributed the success of the commission in managing road traffic during the period to past experiences, increase in personnel and improved technology.
According to him, the commission's operatives were monitored to ensure compliance with assignments given to officers in terms of traffic control and rescue operations, through the use of technology.
Road accidents are common on the oil rich West African country' s poorly maintained roads, especially during festive period. Endi
