Four people were killed and a woman was seriously injured during an avalanche in Glencoe in the northwest Scottish Highlands, the local media reported on Saturday.

Local police and mountain rescue teams were alerted and launched a search and rescue operation to find a party of six climbers who were caught in the avalanche. A seriously-injured woman was taken to the nearby Belford Hospital in Fort William for treatment.

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond expressed sympathies to the families of the victims after hearing the news that four people had died in the avalanche.

"This is an appalling tragedy and our immediate thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who have been lost. To lose four people from a party of six is truly devastating." he noted, promising that the Scottish Government will provide any support possible. Endi
