A French court on Tuesday sentenced workers of the charity Zoe's Ark to two years of imprisonment on attempts to smuggle 103 children from Chad to France six years ago.

Eric Breteau, the president of the charity, and his girlfriend Emilie Lellouch were found guilty of trying to smuggle the children presented as orphans from Darfur to France.

Each of the two defendants will also pay 50,000 euros (67,188 U.S. dollars) fine and will be prevented from practicing any activities related to hospitality, accommodation or minors's placing, according to the court.

Four other volunteers were given between six moths and one year suspended jail terms.

In October, 2007, Chadian officials arrested Zoe's Ark staff for attempting to fly illegally children who were mostly Chadian and had at least one living parent. (1 euro = 1.34 U.S. dollar) Endi
