Henk ten Cate was named as new coach of Dutch second division side Sparta Rotterdam until the end of this season on Thursday.
The 58-year-old Dutchman quit as coach of Chinese club Shandong Luneng Taishan in September last year, following disappointing results in the Chinese Super League. Since his resignation in China he was without a club.
Among other clubs Ten Cate had previously been active as head coach of Ajax and Panathinaikos and assistant at FC Barcelona and Chelsea. He was coach of Sparta Rotterdam from 1995 until 1997. In the 1995/1996 he led Sparta to a sixth place in the Eredivisie and the Cup final.
After sixteen years Ten Cate now returns at Sparta as successor of coach Michel Vonk, who was fired on Tuesday. After three defeats in a row Sparta dropped to the third position in the Jupiler League. The club' s aim is to secure the championship and direct promotion to the Eredivisie this year, the year of the club' s 125th anniversary. Endi
