The container ship "Pride" of China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) was awarded as "the most sustainable ship 2012," according to the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) published by the port of Rotterdam on Saturday.
In 2012, more than 2000 sea going vessels were listed in the index. Five vessels from COSCO stand on the top 10 sustainable vessels list, and Pride ranked first.
"We look at engines, we look at fuel and based on these two issues we can see if the ship is clean or not," Fer van der Laan form World Port Climate Initiative told Xinhua.
Peter den Breejen, director of Cosco Netherlands, was pride of the award.
"I think the most important part is that we should protect the environment and to do business in an environmental-friendly way and of course most of our customers are more and more realizing that transporting of containers is also giving an impact on the environment."
"So I think that we promote our business also by promoting the environment," he added.
The World Port Climate Initiative launched the ESI in 2010 in London. The ESI was designed by the ports of Le Havre, Bremen, Hamburg, Antwerp, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The index indicates the environmental performance of vessels based on their emissions of air pollutants (NOx and SOx) and CO2.
It identifies seagoing ships that perform better in reducing air emissions than required by the current emission standards of the International Maritime Organization. Endi
