The Nigerian military authorities on Tuesday said 294 illegal drums of diesel were impounded during a raid on the site of bunkerers in Calabar, capital of oil-rich Cross River State, on Monday.

Commander of the military Joint Task Force in Cross River State Olaniyi Adebayo said the troop also destroyed one truck load of diesel, six power generating sets, one mini bus and several hoses seized alongside the diesel from the economic saboteurs.

"The army is ready to help government achieve zero bunkering to boost the country's economy. The Nigerian president is fully in support of the eradication of oil bunkering in Nigeria as part of the realization of the transformation agenda, so we are working on intelligence information and I can assure that we will bring this economic sabotage to a halt," he said.

According to Adebayo, it is a collective responsibility of every individual to ensure the eradication of this economic sabotage in Nigeria, Africa's biggest oil producing nation.

The military commander said he personally gave an order that the burnt truck should be cut to pieces to make it impossible for owners to claim and make use of it again. "We are going to cut the truck into pieces to ensure that owners cannot regain them," he added.

He said the suspects had, on sighting the troops, jumped into the water and escaped in their speed boat, while express optimism that the onslaught against oil bunkering was a continuous and fruitful one. Endi
