Thousands of Egyptian Islamists marched in the capital Cairo on Thursday, protesting against recent arrests of ultraconservative Salafists over charges of terrorizing policemen.
The protesters marched from Rabaa al-Adawiya Mosque to the National Security headquarters in Nasr City in eastern Cairo, calling for purging the National Security police as well as ending their brutality and aggression.
Following the upheaval that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, the State Security, which was notorious for brutality and aggression against suspects, was replaced by the National Security apparatus.
Earlier on Thursday, Prosecutor-General Talaat Ibrahim Abdullah ordered Salafist leading figure Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, along with other Salafists, to be referred to the National Security for interrogations over terrorizing policemen, urging besiege of the National Security headquarters and accusing the body of violence and torture without any evidence.
