Russia's Mariinsky Theater is to broadcast on Thursday night Tchaikovsky's legendary ballet Swan Lake in a 3D live feed to over 1,500 theaters in 50 countries around the world.

The performance, part of the St. Petersburg White Nights Festival, will be directed by Ross MacGibbon, who earlier in the week spoke of the challenges of mounting 3D cameras close to the action and of his excitement at being involved in such a major international cultural project.

The 3D broadcast will also feature scenes shot at St. Petersburg's Winter Palace before moving to the action onstage.

Meanwhile, locals wishing to catch the 3D action will be able to enjoy the unique experience in Mariinsky-2, the recently opened 21st-century extension to the original theater. Endi
