A total of six people were killed and 25 others wounded in gunmen attacks targeting security forces across Iraq on Sunday, the police said.
The deadliest attack occurred during the morning rush hours when a suicide bomber blew up his explosive-laden car into the entrance of the police headquarters located in Baghdad's northern district of Kadhmiyah, killing four guards and wounding 17, including three civilians, a source at the interior ministry told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
In the early hours of the day, a border police guard was killed and two others wounded at an outpost near al-Walid border crossing point with Syria when they clashed with a group of militants who tried to cross the border from Syria into Iraq, a border police source anonymously told Xinhua.
In a separate incident, a roadside bomb struck a police patrol in the town of Saqlawiyah near the city of Fallijah, some 50 km west of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, leaving a police vehicle damaged and two policemen on board wounded, a local police source said.
Meanwhile, a leader of a government-backed Sunni paramilitary group, also known as Awakening Council group, was shot dead by gunmen in the town of al-Garma, 10 km east of Fallujah, the source added.
In northern Iraq, a police chief escaped unharmed a roadside bomb explosion near his convoy in western the city of Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, but two of his bodyguards were wounded by the blast, a local police source told Xinhua.
In addition, two policemen were wounded when a roadside bomb hit their vehicle in the town of Qaiyarra, some 50 km south of Mosul, the source added.
Violence is still common in Iraq despite a dramatic decrease since its peak in 2006 and 2007, when the country was engulfed in sectarian killings. Endi
