Visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Argentine counterpart Hector Timerman agreed to expand the "strategic partnership" between the two nations during a meeting held here Monday.
The Argentine Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the two ministers discussed issues of cooperation between the two countries, and main problems facing the world, before signing a declaration.
The declaration backs the Group of Twenty major economies, or G20, as the "main international forum for economic cooperation for its member states," and affirms the two nations are "pleased with the BRICS measures towards democratic reform of the international economic-financial order, the consolidation of the UN's central role in the international system and the protection of the principles of international law."
The BRICS bloc groups Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
On the Syria crisis, the two ministers "expressed their deep concern for the escalation in violence that aggravates the situation" in that country, and "condemned the increasingly more frequent violations of human rights committed by the sides involved in the internal conflict."
The ministers also reaffirmed their position calling for the United States to immediately lift its economic, trade and financial embargo against Cuba, a demand supported by the majority of UN member countries.
Lavrov arrived here earlier Monday. Endi
