Top seed Djokovic makes a solid start at Wimbledon

The world number one Novak Djokovic progressed to the second round of Wimbledon after straight set victory over Florian Mayer in 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 on Tuesday.

Djokovic, the 2011 champion of the grass tournament, proved his solid form in the one-hour-and-56-minute battle by overcoming a tough challenge form the 34th-ranked German.

It was Djokovic's first competitive match after losing a classical semi-final against Rafa Nadal at the French Open. His will face an American of either qualifier Bobby Reynolds or wildcard Steve Johnson in round of last 64.

Also at Centre Court, before Djokovic's return to action, Serena Williams, holder in women's singles, eased into the second round of with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Luxembourg's Mandy Minella.

The American top seed met some test in the second set when the world number 92 delivered a break in game two to establish a shock 2-0 lead. However, the world number one rallied to win four successive games and never looked back to seal the victory in 57 minutes.

Williams, the 16-time Grand Slam winner after her triumph at the French Open earlier this month, now extended her career-high winning run to 32 matches.

Earlier today on Court 12, China's number one Li Na cruised into the second round after a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands.

The sixth seed, backed by the loud approval of a large contingent of her followers, only needed 67 minutes to beat the world number 105 in straight sets.

The victory was a "pretty good start to Wimbledon", according to Li after the match.
