Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe's spokesman on Thursday rejected a media report on the country's election results as "not official."

"Remember only Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is authorised to make the announcement. Why don't we wait for ZEC?" George Charamba told Xinhua over phone.

He was responding to a news report from Johannesburg that cited unnamed sources from Mugabe's Zanu-PF party as saying that Mugabe has beaten his rival Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in Wednesday's polls.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe police say it is illegal to leak the election results and any person who makes unofficial early announcement will be arrested.

Zimbabwe police forces' chief spokeswoman Charity Charamba told Xinhua over phone that police will monitor online publication like Twitter and Facebook platforms as well but can only go after people who are based in Zimbabwe.

Charamba said the arrest warning is in line with the country's Electoral Act.

About 6.4 million Zimbabweans were registered to vote in Wednesday's general elections. ZEC says it will announce the results in five days. Endi
