Former Brazil and Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos has accused football officials in his home country of failing to pay tribute to retiring idols.

Carlos quit playing in 2012 after a decorated 21-year career that included a World Cup triumph in 2002 and three UEFA Champions League titles.

But he said he was among a host of players whose careers had not been sufficiently recognized by Brazil's football confederation (CBF)

"They didn't do anything for Zico so why would they for me?" Carlos told Uol on Thursday. "The CBF hasn't given a decent farewell to many players who have created history by wearing the national team's shirt."

"I'm not just talking about me, but about Rivaldo and others. A simple tribute would mean a lot. It could be a game or a ceremony. The CBF doesn't even think about it."

A CBF spokesperson was not available for comment.
