Russian naval forces are not planning to participate in potential evacuation of Russian and other Commonealth of Independent States (CIS) countries' nationals from Syria, the Navy's General Staff said Wednesday.
"Everyone who needed to leave Syria by a sea route has been withdrawn in the last year. Only employees of the naval support base in (the Syrian port of) Tartus remained to be evacuated," the Navy said in a statement on its website.
According to the Navy, the civilian staff of the Tartus base has already moved to a PM-138 workshop vessel. The Russian warships deployed in the Mediterranean Sea will convoy the vessel to the neutral waters.
Meanwhile, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry sent one more Il-62 plane to pick up Russian and other CIS citizens from the Syrian city of Latakia, the ministry's spokeswoman Irina Rossius told reporters Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Russia withdrawn 89 people from Syria, mostly women and children, with 75 of them holding Russian passports.
The situation over Syria deteriorated gravely due to moves and statements made by several countries recently. Russia has warned against possible military intervention in the Syria crisis, stressing that such attempts would undermine efforts for a political settlement. Endi
