UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan, Haile Menkerios, on Friday welcomed a summit between President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan and President Salva Kiir of South Sudan.
"Menkerios commends the constructive spirit the presidents displayed at the summit and the agreement in relation to the transportation of oil," said Farhan Haq, associate spokesperson for UN secretary-general, at the daily briefing.
The envoy also urged them to "find a compromise on the final status of Abyei as soon as possible," Haq said.
Kiir traveled to Khartoum on Tuesday for talks with al-Bashir on bilateral ties and common interests of the two countries in the fields of oil, industry, finance, security and the implementation of bilateral agreements signed earlier.
During their talks, the presidents agreed on the continuation of South Sudan's oil flow through Sudan's territories.
The two sides also agreed to develop their ties in a manner that serves the common interests of the two countries.
Kiir's visit came 72 hours ahead of the deadline set by Khartoum to halt South Sudan's oil flow via its pipelines. Khartoum gave Juba 60 days to stop supporting rebels in Sudan or it would close pipelines that carry South Sudanese oil for export.
In September 2012, Sudan and South Sudan signed a package of cooperation agreements to end the tension since their separation in 2011, resume export of South Sudan's oil through Sudan and immediately cease any support for the rebels across the joint border. Endi
