River Plate became co-leader in Uruguay's Apertura Tournament together with Nacional and El Tanque, after defeating Cerro Largo 3-1, in a game from the competition's second matchday, local media said Monday.
On Sunday, River Plate, led by coach Guillermo Almada, reverted Cerro Largo's first goal scored by Adolfo Lima in eight minutes, with three goals scored by Claudio Inella (39'), Hamilton Pereira (52') and Michel Santos (81').
"We have a short and young team, which leads us to fight against irregularity. But we have a plan and we are going to fight, " said Almada after Sunday's victory.
After the third matchday, River Plate, Nacional and El Tanque have nine points, followed by Danubio with seven.
The defending champion Penarol is facing a sports crisis under the leadership of Diego Alonso, with only one point after three played games.
In another game of the first matchday, Miramar Misiones and Rentistas draw 1-1 on Sunday and kept some points to remain in first division.
The 2013-2014 champion will arise from several final games between the winners of Apertura and Clausura tournaments plus the annual general position table (the addition of both tournaments). Endi
